Homecoming (An HBCU L(ust)OVE Story)

Homecoming (An HBCU Love Story)
The more things change, the more they stay the same was the first thought that came to mind as I drove into the main entrance of Sampson State University, one of the country’s oldest and most storied HBCUs. I hadn’t set foot on campus since I’d graduated three years prior. I parked my car by my sorority’s plot and walked over. The first person I saw was my linesister, Jada. I did our sorority call and she turned around and ran over to me. “Oh my god, Lorna. I didn’t think you were coming.” I sighed, “I didn’t either but I said fuck it. It’s our five year anniversary plus this scholarship thingy I’m doing and I’d be mad at myself if I didn’t come.”

Are You Fighting Yourself?

Are You Fighting Yourself? By: Honey
“I want to lose 20 pounds but first let me eat this quarter pounder.” “In the next five years I want to buy a house but first let me spend $1,500 on a purse.” That makes perfect sense, right? Of course it doesn’t. Time and time again we are fighting ourselves and we’re the ones blocking ourselves from achieving our goals. I want you to think about your goals and dreams. Are you truly working towards them or are you working against them?

Desperately Seeking Myself

Desperately Seeking Me By: Honey
“You just act so desperate…” The words stung me and silenced me for the remainder of a two and a half car ride through the backwoods of eastern North Carolina. I can’t even remember what my passenger and me were discussing but what they said in that moment hit me like a ton of bricks. I’m sure they’ve forgotten they even said it. It hurt my feelings but I’m glad they did it was the kind of revealing truth that you need because I’m sure they weren’t the only person who was thinking it.
